Engineer Embraces New Challenges
"Take every opportunity you are given"
Interview with Lindsey Alexander, senior principal engineer and lead system designer for Baxter’s Evo IQ Syringe Infusion System
Q: What is your current role?
Lindsey: I'm the lead system designer for Baxter's Evo IQ Syringe Infusion System, which means I'm responsible for bringing all of the different teams together – medical, regulatory, quality, human factors, marketing – to make sure the system incorporates the technical requirements to meet user needs, and industry standards.
Q: What brought you to Baxter?
Lindsey: I was looking for a new challenge. My grandfather was a physician, so I grew up seeing the impact he made on people. Since joining Baxter, I've realized how important it is for me to do a job that's meaningful. Four years ago, my grandfather was hospitalized and used a Baxter infusion pump. I can't help but wonder if he would have recovered without it. Knowing that my company is saving and sustaining lives is why I'm in the health industry, and more specifically why I am a proud employee at Baxter.
Q: What has been your favorite part about working on the Evo IQ project?
Lindsey: Learning about and collaborating with the different functions that contribute to developing a product. I came to Baxter as a lab manager, where my responsibilities came in towards the end of development. This role has opened my eyes to everything that's involved in getting a product to that phase. And, I've gotten to travel to places around the world that I've never been before… China, Australia, the UK. It's been a great experience.
Q: What's it like being an engineer at Baxter?
Lindsey: When I was offered the opportunity to lead this project, my management sat down with me and said: 'We know you can do this. You're the best person we can think of for this position.' This role was outside of my comfort zone, but having their support reinforced my confidence and pushed me to do something that would change the trajectory of my career. Leaders at Baxter truly want to help you grow and develop. I've learned to take every opportunity you're given, even if—especially if—it seems like a challenge.
