Q: What brought you to Baxter, and when did you join the company?

Shakira: My education and background are in chemical engineering, and I have always been interested in the healthcare industry. My first interaction with Baxter was at a career fair held at the University of Mayaguez in Puerto Rico. I joined Baxter as an engineer in 2016 because I wanted to be a part of a company that touches the lives of people around the world every day. 

Mi educación y experiencia son en ingeniería química, y siempre me ha interesado la industria de la salud. Mi primera interacción con Baxter fue en una feria de carrera celebrada en la Universidad de Mayaguez en Puerto Rico. Me uní a Baxter como Ingeniera en el 2016 porque quería ser parte de una empresa que toca la vida de personas de todo el mundo todos los días.

Q: Tell us about your career development at Baxter? 

Shakira: I've had many opportunities to grow in my career at Baxter, within my field of expertise and across other areas. In fact, I recently was promoted to the role of principal engineer at our manufacturing facility in Hayward, California. I tell my colleagues: 'What matters is your willingness to learn and challenge yourself. Don’t be afraid to test your limits and always trust yourself and your capabilities.'

Siento que tengo muchas oportunidades de crecer en mi carrera en Baxter, dentro de mi campo de especialización y en otras áreas. De hecho, recientemente fui ascendida al papel de Ingeniera Principal en nuestra fábrica en Hayward, California.  Le digo a mis colegas:  "Lo que importa es tu disposición a aprender y desafiarte a ti mismo. No tengas miedo de poner a prueba tus límites y siempre confía en ti y en tus capacidades”

Q: Describe what a typical day looks like for you here at Baxter.

Shakira: The first thing that I do every morning is check in with my group to ensure everything is progressing as planned. Since manufacturing is a fast-paced and constantly changing environment, you must be ready for any challenges that may come your way.  Even though there is constant change, two things remain important to me: that every voice is heard, and decisions are made valuing different perspectives. 

Lo primero que hago cada mañana es consultar con mi grupo para asegurarme de que todo avanza según lo planeado. Dado que la fabricación es un ambiente acelerado y en constante cambio, debes estar listo para cualquier desafío que pueda surgir en tu camino.  Aunque el cambio es constante, dos cosas siguen siendo importantes para mí: que cada voz sea escuchada, y las decisiones se tomen valorando diferentes perspectivas.

Q: What is the most fulfilling part of your job?

Shakira: Being a positive influence on my direct reports and being on the forefront of ensuring we fulfill the needs of our customers. Plus, as the leader of a culturally-diverse team, I not only help my team focus on our goals and collaboration, but I also have a great platform for promoting inclusion and diversity of thought.

Ser una influencia positiva para mi equipo y estar a la vanguardia para asegurar que satisfacemos las necesidades de nuestros clientes. Además, como líder de un equipo culturalmente diverso, no solo ayudo a mi equipo a centrarse en nuestros objetivos y colaboración, sino que también tengo una gran plataforma para promover la inclusión y diversidad de pensamiento.

Q: You are active in one of Baxter's business resource groups. What does it mean to be part of it?

Shakira:  I’m a proud Puerto Rican and member of the Latinos @ Baxter business resource group. I joined when I was working in Puerto Rico, and continue to be an active member now that I’m located in the continental U.S. It's a way to build and maintain relationships with employees with similar heritage and interests. Being part of Latinos @ Baxter makes me feel welcomed, valued, respected, and safe to be an authentic Latina at work.

Soy una orgullosa puertorriqueña y miembro del grupo de recursos empresariales Latinos @ Baxter. Me uní cuando estaba trabajando en Puerto Rico, y sigo siendo un miembro activo ahora que estoy ubicada en los Estados Unidos. Es una manera de desarrollar y mantener relaciones con otros empleados de herencia e intereses similares. Ser parte de Latinos @ Baxter me hace sentir bienvenida, valorada, respetada y segura de poder ser una auténtica latina en el trabajo.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in working at Baxter?

Shakira: Baxter is a great company that embraces diversity, allowing for a variety of thought, development and career growth. There are so many opportunities to learn about so many areas in healthcare, the only limit is the one you set for yourself -- don't be afraid to test your limits.
