Remembering Melissa: A Story of Love, Courage, and Community

At Baxter, our people shape our Mission to Save and Sustain Lives every day. In this story we remember Melissa Guinn, a mother, wife, daughter, former colleague and friend, whose life and legacy continue to inspire us.

A North Cove Love Story

As an employee at Baxter's North Cove, N.C., manufacturing facility, Melissa was surrounded by family. Her parents and siblings all worked in different areas of the plant, and so did her soon-to-be husband.

"At Baxter, everyone knows each other. You don't have to worry because you know they’re going to help you when you need it," said Bernice Hensley, a North Cove employee for the past 30 years and Melissa's mother. "We spend time together outside of work, whether it's picnics at the lake or dinner after a shift. That sense of community is what makes us strong."

Melissa first met her husband, Jamie Guinn, while working at Baxter. Jamie, who worked in packing, vividly recalls the exact moment: it was the night of April 16, 2006, during the third shift at North Cove. While in the cafeteria, Jamie saw his chance and struck up conversation with the woman he'd been quietly admiring for weeks.

"The first time I really talked to Melissa was after work. We ended up outside and sat in the parking lot for hours, just talking. From that night on, we were inseparable. She had this way of making every conversation feel like the most important one, and the connection never faded," remembers Jamie.

The two quickly fell in love and on Halloween, Melissa's favorite holiday, Jamie proposed with a jack-o-lantern style proposal – carving "Will you marry me?" into a series of pumpkins. This thoughtful act was demonstrative of their loving, playful relationship and the family they would build, bringing together Melissa's three children and their son River.

Hurricane Helene

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene struck North Carolina, where Baxter's North Cove facility is located. Jamie and Melissa were at home with River taking shelter from the storm when the ground began to move. As an unimaginably powerful landslide swept away their garage and began to engulf their home, chaos ensued but Melissa’s motherly instincts remained strong – seeing another wave of mud approaching, she yelled and signaled for Jamie to move River to different ground. Because of Melissa's warning, Jamie and River made it to safety.

Although safe from the storm, Jamie was badly injured and admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile, Bernice and Brian Hensley – Melissa's parents and long-time Baxter employees – spent days searching through mud and debris looking for her. They drove under fallen trees, through power lines that were hanging in the roads, and used logs to cross water and creeks where destroyed homes were afloat. Tragically, Melissa did not survive and is remembered by her family as a hero.

While Jamie suffered a broken back and recovered in the hospital for weeks, the family was able to return to what was left of Jamie and Melissa's home and recovered some of Melissa's treasured belongings: her wedding dress and rings, a pair of purple cowboy boots, and a quilt that Bernice had made to mark Jamie and Melissa's 17th anniversary. The quilt was stitched with love letters the couple had written each other, Bible pages from their wedding and photos of them together.

The Baxter Community

Baxter friends and neighbors showed up immediately to support Jamie and Melissa's family. In addition to the Employee Resource Center, a central location which provided Baxter employees and the surrounding community with necessities such as food, water, and generators for their homes, coworkers organized donations, brought trailers full of clothes and food, and started a GoFundMe campaign to support the family.

"At Baxter, saving and sustaining lives isn't just about the patients or products we support, it's personal. In times like this, we show up for one another with the same care and commitment we bring to the people who rely on us every day," said Hope Murdock, executive assistant at North Cove.

A Testament to Love and Resilience

In honor of Melissa, family members replicated her rose tattoo and created a Build-A-Bear with angel wings that contains a voice recording from Melissa saying, "I love you" to hear her voice when they're missing her.

"I knew my colleagues would be there, but the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time is beyond anything I could have imagined," said Brian.

But it's not just through these actions that Melissa's legacy lives on – whenever one of her sons laughs, Jamie prepares for another Halloween or Bernice puts on those purple cowboy boots, the family feels and is comforted by her presence.
