Baxter´s HOMECHOICE and HOMECHOICE PRO system, available for sale in the U.S. since 1995 and now available globally, is designed to perform automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). The product is especially suitable for use at home, due to its small size, ease of use and unobtrusive and non-medical appearance. Its simplicity and portability also make it convenient for patients when they travel. Baxter has a travel program for patients who use the HOMECHOICE dialysis instrument. Baxter also offers its HOMECHOICE system in the U.S. and Europe. HOMECHOICE and HOMECHOICE PRO is an APD system designed to deliver a lower fill volume (60mL - 1,000mL), which is required for patients of a smaller body size and weight. Fill volume is the amount of fluid delivered to the patient´s peritoneal cavity during each dialysis cycle.
In 2000, Baxter launched the first Web-enabled renal dialysis product and clinical software system. Baxter´s HOMECHOICE and HOMECHOICE PRO system integrates a new version of the company´s PD LINK software (version 3.0), which enables a physician to remotely monitor home-based dialysis therapy. The easy-to-use, Windows-based software is used in conjunction with an electronic data card (PRO Card), which is inserted into the machine at the start of treatment and captures information during the dialysis session. The patient can then share the data with the physician either using a disk or transmitting through a modem. New software features help improve patient compliance allowing physicians to remotely collect and analyze the data, and make any necessary prescription adjustments.
