Baxter Recognized Among the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations
The Global 100 list, announced each year during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, includes the corporations that have been most proactive in managing environmental, social and governance issues. The list also acknowledges the companies with strong strategic management capabilities, capacity for innovation and ability to respond to changing competitive forces. Baxter has been recognized as a Global 100 company since the list’s inception in 2005. In fact, Baxter is one of two healthcare companies globally, and the only U.S. healthcare company, to have been recognized in the Global 100 each year since the list was first published in 2005.

History in Sustainability: Baxter’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen began more than three decades ago when it established its first formal environmental program and policy in 1977. Since then, some of the company’s efforts related to sustainability have included establishing The Baxter International Foundation in 1986, publishing its first formal ethics manual in 1989, introducing the company’s first work/life benefit program in 1991 and establishing the Corporate Responsibility Office to oversee the company’s ethical practices in 1993. Since 1988, Baxter has reduced packaging materials, reduced water and waste and taken steps to conserve energy. The company has significantly reduced air toxics, and taken significant steps to reduce Baxter’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Active in Sustainability-Related Organizations: Baxter has been active in many organizations related to sustainability, including participation in 1999 as a pilot company for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, which provide a framework for companies to use when issuing sustainability reports. Today, Baxter is a member of the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College, the Business Environmental Leadership Council of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, and the Ethics and Compliance Officers Association. Baxter is also a founding member of the Chicago Climate Exchange.
Recognition for Sustainability Efforts: In addition to the Global 100 list, Baxter is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and has been recognized by Corporate Responsibility Officer magazine as one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens. Baxter was also recently ranked first in the healthcare category of Newsweek's Green Rankings.
Sustainability Priorities: The company’s nine sustainability priorities – which are each supported by several related goals – are broken down into three broad categories: Our People, Our Operations and Products, and Our World. Although Baxter continues to address a broad range of issues related to sustainability, the company defined nine priorities in 2007 to help the company to focus its efforts on key issues of concern to Baxter and its stakeholders and those areas where the company is uniquely positioned to make a positive impact.
