Baxter Taiwan Celebrates 35 Years of Making a Positive Impact on Both Patients and Employees

Inspired by the love and support she received during her treatment, a Baxter PD patient in Taiwan established a patient support group to help others in similar situations.

For more than 35 years, Baxter Taiwan has helped make healthcare more accessible through innovations in home therapy. Baxter employees are committed to ensuring supplies are delivered correctly and efficiently, providing patients with compassionate support during their care.

When Lin Su-Juan was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) following a routine health check-up, she followed her doctor’s advice to begin peritoneal dialysis (PD) while also undergoing treatment for lupus. With PD therapy, she was able to maintain significant flexibility in her treatment schedule.

Over the course of her treatment, Lin interacted with other PD patients and found immense comfort through their support groups. The benefits she received from the group inspired her to start a patient organization as a way to give back and help others in similar situations.

“During my treatment, I received so much support that I was inspired to help others, too,” Lin said. “Together, we can overcome the burdens and despair and help encourage each other to embrace life again without letting our battle with renal disease overcome us.”

Understanding that many PD patients may feel alone in their treatment, Lin established, with support from Baxter Taiwan, the Taiwan PD Patient Association. The group organizes regular activities that allow patients to share their experiences and provide support for one another.

Baxter is committed to investing and partnering with health authorities, healthcare professionals and patients to advance healthcare and create sustainable value for the patients and community in which it operates. The passion of employees helps fuel the positive impact on millions of lives every day through essential renal products and therapies.

“Baxter has been an incredible partner in this journey, always meeting the needs of the group’s patients and ensuring treatment supplies are never disrupted. Often when we travel, our medications would arrive at the hotel even before we have checked in.”

In his 12 years in delivery service at Baxter, Jim has faced a myriad of challenges during the delivery process, from special requests by patients or caregivers to unpredictable national disasters.

“During the Typhoon Morakot that hit southern Taiwan in 2009, many roads were washed away and many patients were cut off or displaced,” Jim recalled. “To ensure their PD treatments were not disrupted, we used Chia-Yi Christian Hospital’s helicopters to deliver dialysis solutions to a community center where many victims were seeking shelter.”

As a core component of Baxter’s home service treatment, Jim recognizes the importance of being patient-centric and understands the varying needs of each of them individually, such as their pick-up habits and the best times and locations to deliver, to become a key member of their support network.

“Over the years, in the process of making regular deliveries of dialysis solutions, many PD patients and I have come to know each other and become integral partners in each other’s lives,” Jim said. “By talking to patients, I learn about their life stories and their battles with renal disease, and, in turn, I am able to personify Baxter’s mission to save and sustain lives.”
