Baxter International Inc. is a global healthcare company that provides essential healthcare solutions to improve the lives of people with critical health needs around the world.
To further promote innovative research, Baxter sponsors an annual award program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Baxter’s Young Investigator Awards are intended to stimulate and reward research applicable to the development of medical innovations that save and sustain patients’ lives. Baxter invites current graduate and postdoctoral students in the North America to submit descriptions of ongoing research. First-tier awards will include a $2,000 cash prize and an on-site presentation of the award-winning research. Second-tier awards will receive a $500 cash prize.
Scope & Criteria of the Award
Successful applications will describe active research that involves one or more of these fields of study. The selection committee will give special emphasis to those projects that clearly demonstrate the potential value to save and sustain lives.
- Instrumental & Analytical Sciences: Elucidating structure at length-scales from sub-nanometers for single molecules and molecular complexes to millimeters for medical devices by developing instrumentation or novel analytical approaches using analytical instrumentation and imaging technologies.
- Life Sciences: Innovation in clinical pathology, pharmacology, biochemistry, pharmacokinetics, and toxicological methods with an emphasis on biomarkers, in vitro alternatives to in vivo methods, and novel models of safety and efficacy with emphasis on drugs, devices, or biologics.
- Medical Device Engineering: Innovation relevant to drug preparation and administration devices, infection control and sterilization technologies, manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing and 3-D printing, fluid mechanics of drug delivery (e.g., IV, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal), patient monitoring, sensing/control technologies, novel medical plastics/materials, and computational modeling (e.g., CFD/FEA) of these areas.
- Pharmaceutical Sciences: Driving innovation by utilizing new and existing formulation and processing methods to develop sterile products that meet patient needs. Applying technologies for solubilization and stabilization of small molecules or biologics to allow development of injectable dosage forms. Developing and implementing process-analytical technologies for manufacturing or for use with drug delivery devices.
This description should clearly describe the connection between the research and acute and critical care medical products. The length should not exceed two pages (including figures and references), with one-inch margins and font size ≥ 12pt. The student’s scientific advisor should also send a letter or e-mail that details the enrollment or postdoctoral status, as well as their specific role in the described research.
All applicants must be currently enrolled graduate students or postdoctoral fellows and must be primarily responsible for the research described. All successful applicants must commit to briefly presenting their results at the annual Baxter Young Investigator Awards ceremony to be held at Baxter’s R&D facility located in Round Lake, Illinois.
Details & Conditions
The presentation will be recorded for broadcast at a later date and shared with Baxter’s worldwide facilities. Some content may be made public through Baxter’s website or through other avenues. For first tier recipients, Baxter will cover the cost of travel to and from the awards ceremony, as well as the cost of accommodations for the nights before and after the ceremony for those traveling from outside the Chicago area.
The deadline for submitting research descriptions and letters will be announced soon. To learn more, read our Young Investigator Award FAQs.
