Giving Back on our Day of Service

Baxter honors Dr. King's legacy through service to the community

Baxter proudly observes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day as a paid holiday for employees in the U.S. and as an opportunity to engage in our local communities around the world. Our 2021 MLK Day of Service resulted in 500 volunteer hours and more than $40,000 in global donations to organizations aligned with Dr. King's vision and Baxter's commitment to racial justice. We spoke to Baxter employees about why service to the community is important to them, and how they're giving back in 2022.

I’m a big believer in giving back to people in need, which I learned from my mother and am making sure to pass along to my son. For the 2022 MLK Day of Service, I’m donating food, clothing, and money to charitable organizations in my community. I’m also participating in Baxter’s Virtual Move-A-Thon for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI). As someone with family and friends battling kidney disease, I know first-hand how important NKFI’s work is. Much like Baxter, they are committed to saving and sustaining lives.

Service to the community is extremely important to me. For several years I have hosted a monthly breakfast at a local soup kitchen and acted as an advisor to a nonprofit called the Yellow Tulip Project, which works to combat the stigma associated with mental illness. For this year’s MLK Day of Service, I’m donating to several of my favorite charities, taking advantage of the generous 2:1 matching gift from the Baxter International Foundation.

I truly enjoy getting out in the community and working to make a difference. Over the years, I’ve volunteered with Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Read Across America, Feed My Starving Children, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, just to name a few. Dr. King dedicated his life to the service of others, and we can all honor his legacy by volunteering our time and resources toward creating a better tomorrow. This MLK Day, I’m participating in Baxter’s Virtual Move-A-Thon, which supports the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, and donating to a local homeless shelter.
