DEERFIELD, Ill and DENVER, Colo., November 14, 2008 — The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and Baxter Healthcare Corporation today honored the 2008 recipients of the NHF-Baxter Clinical Fellowship, a program that aims to increase the number of clinicians providing comprehensive care for individuals with bleeding and clotting disorders and to prepare candidates for academic careers, at the 60th Annual Meeting of the NHF. Baxter pledged to support six additional fellows over the next three years by raising its total contributions to the program to $5.1 million.
“The fellowship program helps sustain the highly specialized bleeding and clotting disorder care system by providing critically needed support for the next generation of hematologists, and we congratulate this year’s recipients,” said Val Bias, chief executive officer, NHF. “We thank Baxter for its ongoing support around this effort so that we can continue to attract new physicians and increase the number of experienced clinicians specializing in bleeding disorders, with a goal of improving patient care.”

“Baxter is committed to being a true resource for the bleeding disorder community, which is why we’ve pledged our support to many community programs like the NHF-Baxter Clinical Fellowship,” said Peter O’Malley, vice president of business alliances, Baxter’s BioScience business. “Advancements in the treatment of bleeding and clotting disorders have allowed community members to live more fulfilling lives than ever before, and hematologists play an integral role in the continuum of care.”
About the NHF-Baxter Clinical Fellowship Program
The NHF-Baxter Clinical Fellowship Program offers up to $100,000 per year, up to two years, for tuition reimbursement, medical school loan assistance and hands-on training in clinical care for bleeding disorders, as well as clinical research projects, at leading hemophilia treatment centers across the country. Fellows learn the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances, standard practices and procedures for clinical research, and the skills and knowledge required to provide comprehensive care.
Recipients of the NHF-Baxter Clinical Fellowship Program will lead research efforts into bleeding and clotting disorders and train and support their peers in providing better care to the bleeding disorders community. Since its inception in 2003, the program has helped to launch the careers of 15 new hematologists. Baxter's expanded sponsorship will support six additional fellows over the next three years.
To be eligible for grants, institutions must be pre-approved by NHF as hemophilia / thrombophilia treatment centers, with qualified clinical and research faculty committed to the development of fellows. Candidates for fellowship grants must have a medical degree, pre-fellowship clinical training and an interest in bleeding disorders.
