DEERFIELD, Ill., AUGUST 1, 2007 – Baxter International Inc. (NYSE:BAX) today announced that Wayne T. Hockmeyer, PhD, has been elected to serve as a member of its board of directors, effective September 2007. Hockmeyer founded MedImmune, Inc. and subsequently served as its chief executive officer and chairman of the board. MedImmune is a Gaithersburg, Md.-based biotechnology company that develops therapies for infectious disease, inflammatory disease and cancer, which has recently been acquired by the AstraZeneca PLC group of companies.

Hockmeyer served as chairman and chief executive officer of MedImmune from 1988 to 2000, and thereafter served as its chairman and as president of MedImmune Ventures Inc. until MedImmune was acquired by AstraZeneca. Previously, he was vice president of Laboratory Research and Product Development at Praxis Biologics Inc., and served as chief of the Department of Immunology at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Hockmeyer is a member of the boards of directors of Middlebrook Pharmaceuticals, Inc., GenVec Inc., and Idenix Pharmaceuticals Inc.
