Baxter Appoints Joy Amundson as President of its BioScience Business

Baxter Also Promotes Two Executives: Jim Utts to Lead European Operations, Bruce McGillivray to lead Renal Business

DEERFIELD, Ill., August 2, 2004 – Baxter International Inc. announced today that its Board of Directors has elected Joy A. Amundson corporate vice president and president of its BioScience business.  She will assume her new responsibilities on Monday, August 9.

Amundson, age 49, previously was an executive with Abbott Laboratories for more than 20 years, most recently as president of its Ross Products business.  She has extensive experience in healthcare, including pharmaceuticals, hospital products and consumer products in domestic and global markets. She received her masters in management degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and her bachelor of arts degree in journalism/advertising from the University of Wisconsin.

In addition, the company announced the promotions of two executives to key operating roles.  Jim Utts, who previously served as general manager of global Oncology within the company’s Medication Delivery business, was promoted to president of Baxter Europe.  Bruce McGillivray, who previously served as president of Baxter’s Renal business in Europe, was promoted to president of Baxter’s global Renal business.  McGillivray and Utts also were elected as corporate officers of the company.

Carlos del Salto, who assumed additional responsibility for the Renal business last fall when there was a transition in leadership for that business, will continue his regional responsibilities for Latin America, Japan and Asia.

“These appointments are important steps in building a leadership team that combines the depth and breadth of knowledge about Baxter with the fresh perspectives of leaders recruited from outside the company,” said Robert L. Parkinson, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer.  “Joy is an excellent fit for our BioScience operation and is well suited to seize the opportunities that exist in this exciting and complex business.  She is an outstanding leader with a diverse range of experiences and joins the company with a proven track record of building businesses, while consistently improving results.”

Reflecting on the promotions into key leadership roles of two experienced Baxter executives, Parkinson added, “Bruce and Jim bring many years of strong operating experience and extensive knowledge of the company to their roles, having served in leadership positions in numerous areas of Baxter’s businesses.  I am confident they will continue to build strong customer relationships and provide the focus and discipline needed to drive Baxter’s success.”

Utts, age 51, began his career at American Hospital Supply (which later merged with Baxter) in 1975, and progressed through a variety of sales, marketing, planning and development, and management roles over the years.  Utts served as president of Baxter’s Medication Delivery business in Europe from 1996 through 2000, and subsequently as general manager of its global Nutrition and global Oncology units.  He also ran the North American operations for the company’s Renal business. He received his master of business administration degree from Pepperdine University and his bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Maryland.

McGillivray, age 49, began his career at Baxter in 1980, and progressed through a variety of sales, marketing and management positions for the company’s Canadian operations.  McGillivray served as president of Baxter Canada from 1997 through 2001, before being named president of Baxter’s Renal business in Europe in 2002.  He received his master of business administration degree from the University of Toronto, and bachelor of arts degree in economics from York University.
