BAXTER'S BRIAN
ANDERSON NAMED CHICAGO'S CFO OF THE YEAR
Chicago,
May 15, 2002 -- The Chicago Chapter of the National Investor Relations
Institute and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University
today awarded Brian Anderson, chief financial officer of Baxter International
Inc. (NYSE: BAX), the organizations' inaugural Chicago Chief Financial
Officer of the Year Award. Anderson was presented the award today at a
luncheon at the Chicago Club.
The Chicago Chief
Financial Officer of the Year Award was developed to honor Chicago-area
chief financial officers who recognize investor relations as a strategic
and critical component of the corporate mission. Investor relations has
evolved from an administrative tactic to an important strategic responsibility
that encompasses the disciplines of finance, communications and marketing
in managing the flow of information to shareholders, analysts, media and
other constituencies.
"We were looking for a CFO with a superior ability to add value to
his or her public company through the development, support and execution
of strategic investor relations," said Cindy Klimstra, a member of
the judges panel. "We were pleased and encouraged with the quality
of all the submissions, each of which illustrated the integral role that
investor relations plays in a CFO's day-to-day job.
"Mr. Anderson's
nomination stood out because his overall leadership qualities were exceptional.
Not only has he steered Baxter through a tremendous growth cycle, he has
also consistently worked with his IR team to clearly communicate the company's
short and long-term goals to the investment community. More importantly,
his stewardship has contributed greatly to the company's valuation. He
is greatly respected by both internal and external constituencies alike."
Entries for the award were evaluated by a panel of experts in the field
of investor relations, including representatives from Ashton Partners,
The Boeing Company, BorgWarner Inc., Kellogg and Zebra Technologies Corporation.
More than 300 public companies in the Chicago area were eligible for the
award.
"This is a wonderful honor for Baxter, the global Baxter investor
relations and financial teams and for me personally," Anderson said.
"I thank NIRI and Kellogg for this award and for initiating this
process. In today's environment, investor relations and communications
are key components of our strategy to enhance shareholder value. As an
organization, we are dedicated to communicating to our shareholders, the
investment community, the media and all of our stakeholders in a consistent
and open manner. I am fortunate to work with a global team of people dedicated
to implementing this philosophy every day with enthusiasm, commitment
and integrity."
Anderson became senior vice president and chief financial officer of Baxter
in February 1998. Prior to that, he served as corporate vice president,
finance, from May 1997 to February 1998, and from 1993 to 1997 was corporate
controller. He joined Baxter as vice president, corporate audit, in November
1991. Before joining Baxter, Anderson worked for 16 years at Deloitte
& Touche, where he was named a partner in l986.
