SHANGHAI CHILD HEALTH FOUNDATION RECEIVES $25,000 GRANT FROM BAXTER INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE FOR 6,500 CHILDREN

SHANGHAI, April 24, 2002 -- Harry M. Jansen Kraemer, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Baxter International Inc., announced today that the corporation's philanthropic arm, The Baxter International Foundation, has granted $25,000 to the Shanghai Child Health Foundation.

Kraemer was on a United States Department of Commerce trade mission in China when he presented the official letter to Huang Rongkui, chairman of the Shanghai Child Health Foundation. It is the first grant The Baxter International Foundation has awarded in China.

"The Baxter International Foundation and the Shanghai Child Health Foundation have long worked toward the same goal, which is to make health care more accessible to children," Kraemer said. "We both recognize that children are the center of our families and the future of our countries."

"This grant will improve the lives of thousands of families throughout Shanghai," said Rongkui. "Families who had difficulty affording medical treatment can now be confident that their children will get the care they need."

The Shanghai Child Health Foundation will cooperate with schools in Shanghai to select children who could benefit from the grant funding. Approximately 6,500 will receive medical care for serious diseases. By helping children get the medical care they need, the Shanghai Child Health Foundation will help prevent health problems from becoming more severe and help ensure healthy growth and development.

The Shanghai Child Health Foundation was established in 1989 by renowned pediatrician Su Zu Fei. The organization was originally called the Shanghai Child Nutrition Foundation and focused on educating families about eating habits that lead to better lifelong health. The group produced a film on infant nutrition that was widely viewed throughout China. In 1999, the organization adopted its current name and expanded its focus. Now it raises funds to sponsor educational programs for health-care providers, medical research, public education about health care and disease prevention, and health-care treatment for children in need.

Baxter has had a presence in China since 1989 and currently employs approximately 860 team members at manufacturing and sales facilities in cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou and Tianjin. Baxter manufactures peritoneal dialysis solutions, hemodialysis concentrates and various intravenous solutions at its four manufacturing China facilities. In addition, Baxter provides products used for the collection of plasma and blood platelets, intravenous solutions, anesthesia therapies and parental nutrition products throughout the country.

As the philanthropic arm of Baxter International Inc., The Baxter International Foundation helps to increase global access to health care. In 2001, foundation grants totaling $4.8 million improved access to care for children, the uninsured and the elderly, helped prevent child abuse and neglect, promoted health education, expanded education opportunities for health-care providers, and helped victims of global disasters.
