75 Years

When Drs. Ralph Falk and Don Baxter opened Baxter Intravenous Products, Inc. on October 19, 1931 in a renovated automobile showroom, they made history by establishing the first manufacturer of commercially prepared intravenous solutions.  Over the next 75 years, Baxter continued to make healthcare breakthroughs and established a long history of firsts with products such as:

  • TRANSFUSO-VAC container, the first sterile, vacuum-type blood collection and storage unit that made blood banking practical for the first time (1939);
  • PLASMA-VAC container, the first means of separating plasma from whole blood and storing it for later use (1941);
  • KOLFF ROTATING DRUM hemodialysis machine, the first commercially available dialyzer equipped with a disposable membrane circuit (1956);
  • BLOOD-PACK closed system, the first disposable plastic system for the collection and processing of whole blood (1959);
  • FACTOR VIII, Baxter introduced the first commercially produced Factor VIII concentrate to treat hemophilia (1968);
  • VIAFLEX bag, the first plastic container for IV solutions (1971);
  • INTERLINK IV Access System, the first “needleless” system for IV therapy (1991);
  • RECOMBINATE, the first genetically manufactured Factor VIII product (1992);
  • TISSEEL fibrin sealant, the first commercially available fibrin sealant (1998); and
  • ADVATE, the first and only Factor VIII made without any added human or animal plasma proteins (2003).

Today, Baxter’s team of more than 40,000 employees proudly stands behind the company’s 75-year history.  At Baxter, however, our history is also our future.  The dedication and commitment embodied by Drs. Ralph Faulk and Don Baxter lives on at Baxter.  As a company, we remain committed to applying innovative science to develop specialty therapeutics and medical products that save and sustain patients’ lives.
